Direct students to read 
the passage and complete the skill practice activity. Review the answers together. For the strategy 
practice activity, have partners work together.

Remind students of the 
Prediction
skill. Say: 
You are going to read a passage about the practice of 
meditation. When you understand a topic well, you can apply what you know to other situations. 
This is another way you can predict what might happen. 
Remind students of the 
Make Connections
strategy. Say: 
You can better understand a passage if you relate the subject to events or experiences 
from your own life.
When students have finished reading the passage, direct them to complete the 
skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.

Tell students they will practice both the 
Cause and Effect 
and 
Prediction
skills as they read about
a fascinating sea creature. Say: 
Look for cause-and-effect relationships. Also try to make 
predictions based on what you read.
Remind students of the 
Ask Questions 
strategy. Say: 
Try to 
find answers to your questions as you read. If you still have questions when you have finished, 
you can look for the answers outside of the text. 
When students have finished reading, direct 
them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.
