To make a comparison, look for how 
two or more things are alike. To make a contrast, look for how two or more things are 
different.
Tell students they are going to read about the similarities and differences between the 
way people ate in the past and the way people eat today. Then remind students of the 
Make 
Connections
strategy (Week 2). Say: 
To make a text-to-self connection, think about how the 
passage relates to your own life. This will help you better engage with and understand the 
information. 
Have students read the passage. Then direct them to complete the skill and strategy 
practice activities. Review the answers together.
DAY
2
Remind students of the 
Compare and Contrast 
skill. Draw a simple Venn diagram. Say: 
You can 
organize information into similarities and differences by using a Venn diagram. 
Tell students 
they are going to read about two types of voles. Model using the graphic organizer by adding 
labels: 
Prairie Vole, Meadow Vole, Both
. Encourage students to draw a Venn diagram and use it to 
sort facts as they read.
 
Then remind students of the 
Organization
strategy (Week 4). Say: 
Think 
about the main idea in each paragraph and how the paragraphs are organized in the whole 
passage.
When students have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and strategy 
practice activities. Review the answers together.

3
Review the 
Make Inferences 
skill with students. Say: 
You can infer information about fictional 
characters by thinking about what you read and what the author is suggesting about the 
characters. 
Then remind students of the 
Make Connections 
strategy. Say:
