m ore  than  fifty   accentual-syllabic  p attern s  o f   E nglish  w ords  fo r 
foreign  lea rn ers3.  O ther  authors  d istin g u ish   abo ut  forty  to  eighty 
a ccen tu al-sy llabic  patterns  o f  E n g lish   w o rds4.  C ited belo w   are  th e 
m ost  usual  accentu al-sy llab ic  p attern s  o f   E nglish  w o rd s  using 
G.P.  T o rsu y ev 's  graphic  notation:  _L  a  syllable  w ith  prim ary  
stress,  T  sy llab le  w ith  secondary  stress  -   a  w eak  syllable.  T hus, 
for  co n v in ien ce,  we  distinguish  three  d egrees  o f  w ord  accent,  re ­
garding  the  tertiary  stress  as  a v ariant o f the  secondary  stress  o r as 
a  type  o f  
alloaccenteme, 
though  th ere  is  a  slig ht  differen ce  b e­
tw een these tw o   degrees  o f w ord accent.
T h e  m on osy llabic  w ords  h av e  no  stress  pattern.  T h ey   hav e 
one  deg ree  o f  stress  if they  are  m ain   w ords,  w hich  include  nouns, 
adjectives,  v erbs,  adverbs,  n um erals.  T h e  auxiliary  w o rd s  (p ro ­
nouns,  prep o sitio n s,  conjunctions,  aux iliary   verbs  and  certain   a d ­
verbs)  are  u sually  unstressed   or  h a lf  stressed.  T h eir  stressing 
depends  up on   the  prosodic  structure  o f phrases  o f w hich  they  are 
c o nstitu en t parts.
