GIANT AND SUPERNATURAL STRENGTHS IN THE HOLY AND EPIC TEXTS
Summary
In this article, the author analyzes the parallels between sacred and epic texts, which present numerous common functions and themes. Among the common functions, we should mention: 1) To define who belongs to the tribe and who does not and 2) To justify or consecrate alliances and enmities with other tribes, based on the personal relations between the mythical forefather of the own tribe and the mythical forefathers of other tribes. Among the common themes, we should highlight; 1) the cult of hospitality and 2) the existence of heroes and anti-heroes with supernatural powers and gigantic proportions. In order to understand these parallels, we should keep in mind two characteristics of humans in earlier stages of social development. The first one is that their life and world view were characterized by fight in all its forms, against enemies, nature and supernatural forces. The second one is that they made no clear distinction between the natural and the supernatural. Natural phenomena and supernatural forces were just two sides of the same medal. The same might be said about physical and spiritual individuals. Friends and foes could be from this side of reality or from the other one and, therefore, fight could take place on any of the two fronts. That is why, the more we go back in time, the more similar epic and sacred text are, until they finally melt into one cultural and spiritual phenomenon.
