Refutation, refutation, and refutation! Oh, and a debriefing. You're in the polar position. You've had almost an hour to prepare your speech, and that's a huge advantage. You are not allowed to introduce new information into the debate in your speech, but remember that by "new information" we mean new key arguments and examples.

You can show new examples in the rebuttal process, but they must relate directly to the points you are rebutting, but you cannot make such an example the cornerstone of your argument. Many JVs will run their speech in such a way as to deal with the Government speakers one by one, and this generally works quite well in bringing structure to your speech.

At the same time, many JVs make the mistake of getting carried away with rebuttal at the expense of summarizing. Ideally, you should use a summary of everything the opposition has said before as a rebuttal. However, you should try to make a certain part of the summary clear. Don't get carried away with the rebuttal, leaving the summing up to the last 40 seconds of your speech. Remember that many inexperienced judges exist who may not recognize that you have combined summarizing and rebuttal in your speech, and unfortunately, will punish you for giving only a few seconds to summarizing.
