collector A. W. Mellon's gift °f his collection for the nation. Mellon hoped that the National Gallery would attract gifts
from other collectors. This hope was realized. But the paintings and sculpture which were given by Mellon are the centre of the growing collection. Tours of the collection are offered in many different languages and the museum is open all year round.
