Private Prisons

• There are roughly 100 private prisons operating in 35 states
• They hold roughly 8% of the American prison population
• They hold 7% of the state prison population
• They hold 16% of the federal prison population
• They hold many alleged illegal immigrants, but that number is not known

Extralegal Prisons

Facilities outside of the U.S. where we intern people, never charge them but just hold them, torture them, kill them:

• Guantanamo
• Abu Ghraib
• Camp Whitehorse
• Camp Bucca
• Camp Redemption

These facilities are set up in countries that we control or countries who wish to continue to receive foreign aid. Obviously no one has a complete list of these facilities as many are set up by the U.S. military and various U.S. intelligence community entities (of which there are 17) and run as independent, “rouge” facilities. Abu Ghraib had as many as 7,500 detainees, so large it could not be hidden and our egregious misbehaviors there were eventually exposed. By comparison, the largest American maximum-security prison holds “just” 6,300.
