• Utilizing a nurturing environment to overcome the latent/genetic-based vulnerabilities, including the use of genetic screening to identify those with the highest levels of vulnerability.
• Being alert to/compensating for insufficient brain development/brain abnormalities.

implants, anti-adrenaline injections, castration (physical and

chemical), pink rooms

In sum, crime can be reduced by altering the bio-chemical

makeup of the body.

Future of Corrections in America?

We can speak of specific reforms as we have, but the fundamental need is a change of communal attitude when it comes to the subject of corrections in America. We are far too harsh in our “correctional” perspectives, and of course are certainly not correcting in the aggregate sense. While such an orientation may make us feel good (revenge psychology) we are destroying lives and aggravating the crime problem. This is a definitive American cultural defect. We are a punitive society – we have 4.5% of the world’s population and 27% of the prisoners. Some 3% of the American adult population is under some form of correctional supervision. We can’t keep doing this.

 

Perhaps the place to start is the back-end. We need to minimize/eliminate the ex- con stigma legally and socially. End the labeling, the ostracizing, abolish the de facto Bills of Attainder we have enshrined in our statutes. Abandon the quintessentially sanctimonious least eligible notion that is so ingrained, so embedded in our culture and replace it with attitudes and activities that will assist and promote successful reintegration and societal re-entry of those who have strayed. Until we do, we will continue to descend into the vortex of our own doing.
