An overview 
1. 
An electronic trial (eTrial) is a trial in which the trial bundle is 
submitted electronically and the items submitted within that electronic 
trial bundle may be viewed in court and tendered as evidence.

The Court has the capacity to take electronic materials submitted by 
the parties, load those materials into the Court's case management 
system (ICMS) and then manage the submitted items in ICMS 
throughout the trial.

ICMS is an internal court system and is not available for the parties to 
use. The associate to the trial judge will open and display the 
submitted items in ICMS throughout the trial, record tendered items 
as being either 'marked for identification' or an 'exhibit', and otherwise 
manage the submitted items.

In this way the Court and the parties then use the same materials, 
formatted in the same way, with the same identification of documents.
The purpose of this Practice Direction

This Practice Direction is intended to give guidance to parties who 
may be required, or who request, that the trial be conducted by way of 
eTrial. It deals with three specific matters: 
(a)
Requesting an eTrial; 
(b)
Submitting the electronic trial bundle and papers for the judge; 
and 
(c) 
Procedures during an eTrial.

Attached to this Practice Direction, at 1.2.5.1, is a set of standard 
directions for an eTrial of a civil action, that can be used by the Court 
(suitably adapted as the circumstances dictate) to direct that the trial is 
by eTrial, and for the submission of an electronic trial bundle and 
papers for the judge.
