The role of the case manager

The judge in charge of the criminal list will nominate a judge or 
commissioner to manage the case, or parts of the case.
7. 
The case manager will manage the case with a view to: 
(a) 
identifying the real issues in the case as early as possible; 
(b) 
identifying the needs of witnesses in the case as early as 
possible; 
(c) 
achieving certainty as to what must be done, by whom, and 
when; 
(d) 
monitoring the progress of the case and compliance with 
directions; 
(e) 
ensuring that evidence, whether disputed or not, is presented in 
the shortest and clearest way; 
(f) 
discouraging delay, dealing with as many aspects of the case as 
possible on the same occasion, and avoiding unnecessary 
hearings; 
(g) 
encouraging the participants to co-operate in the progression of 
the case; and 
(h) 
making use of technology.

Participants in case management 
8. 
Anyone involved in any way with a criminal case is a participant in its 
conduct for the purposes of this Practice Direction. 
9. 
Each participant, in the conduct of each case, shall: 
(a) 
prepare and conduct the case in accordance with the overriding 
objective of criminal case management (see par 2); 
(b) 
comply with this Practice Direction and directions made by the 
court; and 
(c) 
promptly cause the court to be informed of any significant 
failure to take any procedural step required by this Practice 
Direction or any direction of the court (whether or not that
