The clinician needs to consider the developmental
age of the child. Observation while performing
tasks that require a certain level of self-control and
sustained attention can be helpful but the diagnosis
should not be based purely on observed behaviours
in clinic. When possible, a school visit can provide
invaluable information to support the diagnosis.
Teenagers can often describe their symptoms,
for instance subjective feelings of restlessness,
and provide information on their level of social
functioning. However, self-reports of ADHD
are not a substitute for reports from informants,
have poorer predictive validity than parental
reports, and should not be used alone to make the
diagnosis [12].
