DEVELOPMENTAL DOMAINS
Children whose sequence of development shows
moderate or severe developmental delay, plateau-
ing or regression, require further assessment,
including an examination of their vision and
hearing. ‘Red flag alerts’ can be found in Tables
6.1 to 6.5.
Gross motor
Delay in gross motor milestones (Table 6.1) may
indicate neurological abnormalities. Although
there is a weak correlation between gross motor
and general developmental delay, it usually
impacts the learning and performance of skills. A
physical examination should be combined with
assessing the child’s sequence of development,
style of learning, avoidance behaviours, sensory
sensitivities or impairments, as well as a qualitative
description of their motor competencies.
