resources and remain hypervigilant to potential
social threat in their environment, likely to be at
the cost of other developmental processes.
THE ROLE OF GENETIC INFLUENCES
It is a common but often striking clinical experience
to find that two children who have experienced
very similar patterns of early adversity have very
different outcomes. While this may be partly due
to specific environmental or psychological factors
characterizing one child, but not the other, there is
increasing evidence that such differential outcome
may in part at least be due to genetic differences.
