THE IMPACT OF MALTREATMENT
ON BRAIN DEVELOPMENT
A growing body of research has investigated how
stress, and specifically different forms of childhood
maltreatment, can influence neural structure and
function. These studies have employed both chil-
dren who have experienced maltreatment or adults
reporting childhood histories of early adversity.
The main brain imaging modalities are summa-
rized in Figure 20.1. In this chapter we focus on
studies of children, first considering those that
have investigated differences in brain structure,
followed by the smaller number of studies that
have investigated the potential impact of maltreat-
ment on brain function.
