Chapter 1.Using videos in English lessons
1.1 Stages of working with video texts and their tasks.
Types of tasks for each stage.
When working with any text in the methodology of teaching foreign languages, it is customary to distinguish three main stages: the pre-text stage (pre-viewing), the text stage (while viewing), and the post-text stage (post) after-viewing).
I.Pre-text stage
Stage goals:
1. motivate students, set them up to complete tasks, making them active participants in the learning process;
2. remove possible difficulties in reading the text and prepare for successful completion of the task.
Types of tasks:
1. Various options for anticipating the text content based on:
generalization of previously acquired knowledge on this topic;
header details;
skimming a part of the movie without sound;
a list of new words with translation or definitions, presented before the text;
content of questions or correct / false statements.
2. Teacher's summary of the main content of the text
The teacher can briefly convey the main plot of the video fragment, explaining in this way what is to be seen. If the story is of interest to students, then this introduction is intended to interest the audience, which means that the first goal of the stage can be considered achieved. In their speech, the teacher can convey the main idea of the text in simple and understandable words, or even save a number of difficult-to-understand expressions. The main thing in this case is to anticipate possible difficulties of a linguistic, speech and socio-cultural nature and remove them using various techniques, including explanation, interpretation, translation, correlation with previously studied material, etc. It is obvious that in order to use this type of task, the teacher needs to have a certain level of professional-methodical and professional-communicative competence.
When using this type of task, keep in mind that the text of the introduction itself is not a setting for initial viewing, so you should clearly and clearly formulate the task for the time of viewing the text by selecting one of the tasks of the second stage, which will be discussed below.
3. Preliminary research or project work
You can complete a cycle of lessons on a particular topic or problem by watching videos. Students receive a task in advance to study a specific material, which logically prepares them for viewing the video. Preliminary reading of texts and discussion of problems on the same topic (in your native and foreign languages) also help to increase motivation during video viewing, provided that the video opens up new perspectives on this topic, contains an element of novelty and unpredictability.
