The usage of video materials at English language

The object of the work is audio-visual materials and tools that can be used in English lessons.
The aim is to show the possibility of using audio-visual means in English lessons in a modern school, aimed at developing students ' communicative competence and developing all types of speech activity.
This goal is achieved through the following tasks::
1. Analyze the methodological literature on the problem;
2. Identify the types of audiovisual media and give them a methodological description;
3. Identify the features of working with video materials in English lessons;
4. Select video materials and prepare exercises using video recordings.
Research methods: analysis of methodological literature, synthesis, generalization.
The actual material for the study was scientific articles, methodological literature devoted to this problem, various Internet sites, as well as feature films, video tutorials, TV shows, cartoons.
Practical significance of the study: the developed and proposed methods and techniques can be used in English lessons in secondary schools.

Modern interpretations of communicative competence in the field of teaching foreign languages go back to the definition of the American scientist D. Himes, according to which,“communicative competence is what a speaker needs to know in order to communicate in culturally significant circumstances."


It is very difficult to master communication skills in English without being in the country of the language being studied. Therefore, an important task of a teacher is to create real and imaginary situations of communication in a foreign language lesson, using various methods and techniques of work (role-playing games, discussions, creative projects, etc.).
No less important is the task of introducing students to the cultural values of the native language people. For this purpose, it is very important to use authentic materials (drawings, texts, sound recordings, etc.). Acquaintance with the life of English-speaking countries occurs mainly through text and illustrations to it.
The undoubted advantage of modern English language textbooks for secondary schools is the richness of their country-specific information. A significant place among texts is occupied by such types of texts as letters, advertisements, signs, questionnaires, menus. All facts and phenomena, all information about different areas of reality in English-speaking countries were selected taking into account the age of students and their interests. Mastering this material will allow students to better navigate the country of the language being studied if they actually visit it.
Along with this, it is important to give students a clear idea of the life, traditions, and linguistic realities of English-speaking countries. This purpose can be served by educational videos, the use of which contributes to the implementation of the most important requirement of the communicative methodology. “..to present the process of language acquisition as comprehension of a living foreign-language reality...”
Moreover, the use of video recordings in the classroom contributes to the individualization of learning and the development of motivated speech activity of students. When using videos in foreign language lessons, two types of motivation are developed: self-motivation, when the film is interesting in itself, and motivation, which is achieved by showing the student that he can understand the language he is learning. This brings satisfaction and gives you self-confidence and a desire for further improvement.
It is necessary to strive to ensure that students get satisfaction from the film precisely through understanding the language, and not just through an interesting and entertaining plot.
