cials say the schedule change
reflects weekday ridership,
which is about 75% lower than
pre-pandemic levels as many
white-collar employees have
continued to work remotely.
Some commuters on Mon-
day posted photographs and
messages on social media ask-
ing how they were supposed
to maintain social distancing
when people are forced to sit
or stand close together.
State Sen. Todd Kaminsky, a
Long Island Democrat, said
the crowding undermines New
York’s attempts to restore con-
fidence in public transporta-
tion. “Making it unpleasant,
undignified and a potentially
unsafe experience does not
make sense,” he said.
Gerard Bringmann, chair-
man of the Long Island Rail
Road Commuter Council, an
advocacy group, said the real-
ity is that now many riders
had to wait 30 to 60 minutes
between trains during the
morning rush hour.
MTA officials said the
crowding wasn’t as bad as so-
cial media made it appear.
Phil Eng, the president of
LIRR, said 77% of rush-hour
trains were less than half full
and that crowding was limited
to a few services or was iso-
lated to certain cars.
Mr. Eng said the railroad
will add one train on each of
the Ronkonkoma and Babylon
branches Tuesday morning
and add cars to one train on
the Long Beach Branch to alle-
viate crowding.
