Sacred Bukhara is one of the tourist gems of Uzbekistan. The historic city centre is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The age of the city exceeds 2500 years. Let us say one thing. Poi-Kalyan architectural ensemble The Poi-Kalyan architectural ensemble was built in the XII-XVI centuries and located at the foot of the magnificent Kalyan minaret on the Registan square in Bukhara. The complex consists of two madrassas – Miri-Arab and Amir-Alimkhan, the Kalyan minaret and the mosque of the same name. An interesting fact is that this place has already had a cathedral mosque with a minaret since the Arab conquest in the VIII century. In the XII century the city was rebuilt and a new mosque and minaret appeared there. According to the Central Asian historian Narshakhi, the minaret was beautiful, but not insecure. His words turned out to be prophetic, as after the construction was completed, the minaret fell and destroyed most part of the mosque and the Kalyan minaret, which has survived to the present day, were built. The citadel has always reliably protected the rulers of Bukhara. In addition to the shahs, it was also home to scientific and cultural figures of Asia – Avicenna and Omar Khayyam. This place has its own beautiful history. According to legend, Siyavush, a young youth, wanted to marry the daughter of the ruler of Afrosiab. Afrosiab said that he would give his beloved daughter in marriage if the young man had the strength to build a fortress on a bull's hide, to which the young man agreed. A smart guy made a carpet out of skin, on which he erected an incredible citadel. At the moment, Ark is the oldest archaeological monument. It takes your breath away just to look at it. The Minor Mosque The opening of the mosque took place before a significant event for the Muslim world – the Eid al-Fitr holiday in 2014. During construction, all the norms for traditional Oriental architecture were observed, but the mosque differs from the more ancient ones in its white marble decoration. It can accommodate more than 2,500 people. On Sunny days, the shrine shines in the sun. Lyabi-Hauz ensemble The majestic Lyabi-Hauz ensemble (transl.from uzb. "By the pond") - one of the central monuments of ancient Bukhara. Kukeldash madrassah, Divan Begi madrassah, and the Khanaka (Sufi abode) of the same name make up the Central historic square. First there was the Nadir Divan Begi madrassah, which includes a Khanaka, a swimming pool and a Caravanserai, which was later converted into another madrassah. Tourists are interested in this place because it hosts concerts, fashion shows of Uzbek dresses and many other bright events. Near the madrassah stands a bronze monument of the humour and national hero Khoja Nasriddin, installed in the late 20th century. on Bukhara streets, you can find many different souvenir shops and workshops. Most of the shops are located along Lyabi-Hauz Square and in the shopping domes, which are located next to the famous Poi-Kalyan Ensemble. In addition to the clothes, you can buy ikat fabric. Cuisine The main dish of all cities of Uzbekistan is pilaf. Traveling across the regions of the country, you will be surprised how many different types of this dish is being prepared. Osh-Sophie is considered dietary because of the cooking method. It is being prepared in a peculiar way; it is not mixed, unlike in Andijan or Tashkent. History 🏺 This majestic city, according to the most conservative estimates, is more than 2500 years old and there are many ancient mosques, madrassas and tombs of the Islamic saints on its territory. Throughout the history, people have said that graceful light descends from heaven to all Muslim cities, but only above Bukhara this light will rise to heaven. Bukhara is the only city in Central Asia whose history was almost completely documented by the famous historian of the X century – Narshakhi. In his writings, he said that no city had as many names as Bukhara. In China in the V century, it was called Nyumi, during the Tang Empire, it was called An, Ansi, Buho and Buhe. However, most often in history it is mentioned as Bukhara. According to the etymologists, this name comes from the Sogdian “bukharak”, which translates as “happy place”. Now on the territory of Bukhara there are more than 140 monuments belonging to the different eras, quarters and even entire areas, erected more than one century ago, have been preserved. Bukhara is also called the city of poetry and fairy tales, as the whole old city is full of legends and stories!
