“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”

Play “People Bingo”. Make a Bingo grid. Fill squares with activities that students would do in the summer, such as “went to a concert, traveled to another city, swam in a lake, ate ice cream, learned to ride a bike”, written in the target language. The students ask each other if they did one of the activities and then ask their name and write it in the square. When they get a row completed, they sit down and tell who did what, and introduce their new classmates, i.e. “Janice listened to music.”
-
Get to know your students better by having them fill out a questionnaire about their favorite foods, activities, singers, and sports. Ask them who they admire, what they want to become, what they like and dislike. Use this to personalize stories and questions in the target language to aid comprehension and increase engagement.
