1.1. Gives an introductory information on the main issues that will be discussed during the lecture.

1.2. For the purpose of summarizing the data of the previous lecture, the teacher gives a set of questions concerning the stylistic problems of translation (translation of texts belonging to different functional styles; peculiarities of translation of newspaper and publicist texts).

(50 minutes)

2.1. For the purpose of clarifying the central problem of the lecture the teacher gives a series of questions:

  1. What can you say about the translation of texts belonging to belles-lettres style?

  2. What can you say about the distinctive features of texts belonging to belles-lettres style?

  3. What kind of difficulties did you come across while reading and translating the English language literary texts?

The teacher makes comments on the students’ answers.

2.2. Provides the theoretical data connected with the general considerations of translation of texts belonging to belles-lettres style;

2.3. Outlines the specific features of the problem of equivalence in the translation of emotive prose; describes the cases illustrating the flexibility and broader character of equivalence in the translation of texts belonging to belles-lettres style; makes comments on the examples proving that the conception of equivalence in the translation of emotive prose is flexible, broad and comprehensive;

2.4 Describing the cases illustrating the peculiarities of translation of original stylistic devices (metaphor, metonymy, epithet, allusion, alliteration, etc.); gives the examples of original stylistic devices and makes comments on the ways of their translation;

Final stage
(10 minutes)

3.1. Summarizes the main points of the lecture. Gives questions about the general stylistic problems of translation and typical features of literary texts of English in comparison with other languages.
