Problem statement

The United Kingdom has been significantly impacted by the shocks of the pandemic of COVID-19, these impacts are evident from the highest rates of the per capita deaths in the United Kingdom among all of the other G7 and EU27 countries (Heald & Hodges, 2020). Further impacts are evident as well as a result of the highest fall in its gross domestic product as recorded on 30th June 2020, to be around 20.4%. Significant number of COVID-19 cases and uncertain deaths have resulted in uncertain and unplanned expenditures and spending from the side of the government, which is proposed to result in net economic deficit (Heck et al., 2020). Even after several measures, it is still anticipated that the future and the economic conditions are going to remain uncertain, and effective economic policies cannot be formulated in such uncertain and disturbing conditions (Jeris & Nath, 2020). So, in order to address this problem and make this situation possibly better, it is very important to exactly analyze the factual impacts of the COVID-19 cases and deaths on the net economic deficit and the economic policy uncertainty in the context of United Kingdom.

Justifications and rationale

The study has taken up the objectives to analyze the impacts of monthly and total cases of the COVID-19 pandemic and the total deaths as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economic policy uncertainty and economic net deficit in the context of United Kingdom (Naeem, 2020; Olivia, Gibson, & Nasrudin, 2020). These are the variables that have not been considered by any previous studies, as most of the studies have analyzed the accumulative impacts of the pandemic of COVID-19, however, this study will be analyzing the impacts of the monthly and total cases along with the total deaths individually (Ozili & Arun, 2020; Samadi, Owjimehr, & Halafi, 2021). So, it can be analyzed that what role these variables have played in impacting the economic policy uncertainty and economic net deficit in the United Kingdom adversely. Furthermore, the study will be utilizing latest tools and techniques in order to perform analysis that will reveal the relationships among the dependent and independent variables.
