WHAT IS AN INTELLIGENT HOME? An intelligent home adapts to your needs and desires – automatically controlling the functions of the home. It will learn and work around you, observing how you actually live, which rooms you spend the most time in and how you use heating and lighting. It seamlessly and intelligently supports and enhances your living environment without your input and taking into account the external factors such as weather.
WHAT IS A SMART HOME?
It seems that these days everyone is talking about smart homes, so before we discuss further about intelligent homes, it is important to understand first about smart homes and home automation and what they do.
As the advert goes, a smart home lets you control your home from your phone. Smart home technology, also often referred to as home automation or domotics from the Latin word “domus” for home, provides homeowners security, comfort, convenience and energy saving by allowing them to control smart home devices via a smart home app on their smartphone.
When you’re not home, nagging little doubts can start to crowd your mind. Did I turn the lights off? Did I set the security alarm? Did I leave the heating on? With a smart home, with a quick glance at your smartphone, you can check whether all is OK and turn off the lights, turn on the security and set the heating to your desired level.
A smart home is one in which the multimedia and household appliances interact and can be controlled remotely. Smart home technology can be programmed to automate everyday tasks, while appliance settings such as heating, lighting and loudspeaker volume can be adjusted quickly via your smartphone to your personal preferences.
This is however, not an intelligent home. It is not really smart either. It is much like using a remote control for a TV and calling it a smart TV. Smart homes are convenient and have some attractive features but are only a stepping stone towards the intelligent homes of the future.
A smart home is where two physical devices interconnected to each other by remote controllers. A smart home technology called as Home automation, which provides security, comfort and energy efficiency by allowing a smartphone. The smart home hub is a device which acts as central part of the smart home and is able to sense data with wireless communication. IOT (Internet of things) plays a crucial role in smart home technology. These devices share user’s data between two devices. Raspberry Pi is the technology we use for building a smart home. Nowadays, we use technologies like Zigbee and Z-wave for protocol communication in building a smart home.
Some of the smart home technologies going to happen in future:
1. Automated robot:
Automated robots devices like Irobots used a lot in the smart home for cleaning the floor, serving food and drinks to guests, picking up the dirt and others. A sensor system placed on the human’s arm, therefore it can be controlled by embedding touchscreen and also answers the voice commands given by a human.
2. Smart Appliances:
Nowadays, every product in the market is becoming smarter. In the market, we can purchase refrigerators, washing machines and other devices with enabled with touchscreen displays. This will make more convenient and human lives easier. For example, imagine a washing machine washed the clothes and dries it for you when you got into the washing room- ordered by a human through the phone.
3. Smart Lighting controls:
Turning on and off the lights were done by using a smartphone or automated system. It will check the people in the room and according to that light will be adjusted. It also has the sensor like, if anyone enters the room light will be on.
Smart home devices and standards
The range of different smart home devices and technologies available is expanding rapidly along with developments in computer controls and sensors. This has inevitably led to compatibility issues and there is therefore a drive to standardise home automation technologies and protocols. In Europe, Installation Bus, or Instabus is becoming a recognised smart home technology protocol for digital communication between smart devices. It consists of a two-wire bus line that is installed along with normal electrical wiring. Instabus lines links appliances to a decentralised communication system and functions like a telephone line over which appliances can be controlled. The European Installation Bus Association is part of Konnex, an association that aims to standardise home and building networks in Europe.
Regardless of the technology, smart homes present some very exciting opportunities to change the way we live and work, and to reduce energy consumption at the same time. Imagine being able to check messages, open windows, operate lights and curtains and monitor how much money your house has made you from your renewable energy system, through your smart phone, from anywhere in the world!
