Task -1.
In the following task you will have to observe conversational maxims and their flouting.
(1-3) The first part of the dialogue I observed that there is given a MAXIM OF MANNER. Because Melvin’s answer was clear and not obscure. Also there was not any unnecessary prolixity. Also there is given information effectively and efficiently understandable.
(4-7) The next conversation is FLOUTING CONVERSATIONAL MAXIMS. So Melvin must not to add to this question because there is given clear information that Melvin can only support with the answer of “yeah”.
(9-16) Here is MAXIMS OF RELATION. Because Melvin’s speech completely different than the question. That is they are not compatible with each other. There isn’t any relevance between them. If we look to the question, the Lisa wants to know about cooking, but in the answer there isn’t any information about cooking, it is not depend on the question. There is given a talk of dishwashing and visiting
(17-18) Here is FLOUTING CONVERSATIONAL MAXIMS. Because Melvin knows what is the speech about going on. He is answering with another sentences, but he knows what is the main context
(19-21) In my point of view here is MAXIMS OF QUANTITY. Because there is lack of information to the question. The questioner waits more response but Melvin is restricted to answering “yeah”
Task -2.
Define the types of Speech act and comment on your decision.
The Boss’s speech depends on Declarative speech act. Because in The first and third sentences boss is asking a question.
The next sentence boss is warning to Dalziel.
Here is given Representative speech act. Dalziel gives his own opinion to the situation. Also he adds some information about the person.
This is Directive speech act. Because boss is asking a question.
This is Representative speech act. He gives some statements. He supports his ideas with examples and in details. The speaker offers his view of the world as he understands it. He tells about visitors who come for a local pub. In addition he mentions their staying and taking horses.
9. In this line there are used three types of speech acts. The first sentence is based on Expressive speech act, because he expresses his attitude to the situation. Next one is Directive speech act, he warns not to upset the locals. The last sentence is Representative speech act, so he expresses his opinion on the situation. The speaker represents his thoughts.
10. Here is given Commissive speech act. He offers some suggestion to his boss.
12. This is Directive speech act. The boss strictly commands his worker. Because Directives are those kinds of speech acts that speakers use to get else to do something. The express what the speaker wants. So there is a command and it is warn, that’s why this part of the dialogue depends on the Directive speech act.
