Complex sentences with predicate clauses
Predicate clauses are adjuncts to the nominal predicate of the principal clause which is the pronoun тот [то, та, те] the one, такой? [такая, такое, такие] such таков [такова, таково, таковы] such or всё all.
Predicate clauses answer the question кто (кто такой) who? (what kind of person) что (что такое) what (what kind of person?), what (какой, каков)
Хозяин- тот, кто трудится. The master is who works.
(Question: кто Хозяин?)
Каков я прежде был, таков и ныне я. Now I am the same as I was before.
(Question: каков я ныне?)
Каким ты был, таким ты остался. You have remained the same as you
were before.
(Question: Каким ты остался?)
Туман был такой, что в двух шагах The fog was so thick that you could not
ничего не было видно see anything a few steps away
In predicate clauses, the conjunctive words кто ‘who’, что ‘that’ c ‘which’, какой ‘what’, ‘which’, каков ‘what’, чей ‘whose’ are used:
Я тот, которому внимала I am the one you listened to.
Ты в полуночной тишине In midnight’s silence
Я тот, кого никто не любит. I am the one whom no one loves.
Это всё, что мне нужно. This is all I need
Каков мастер, такова и работа Such is the master, such is the work.
In predicate clauses, the conjunctions что and чтобы are used:
Ветер был такой, что трудно было удержаться на ногах.
The wind was so strong that it was difficult to keep on your feet.
Время сейчас не такое, чтобы можно было отдыхать
It is no time for rest.
The conjunction что and чтобы are used when the predicate of the principal clause is the pronoun такой or таков.
Predicate clauses with the conjunction что connote consequence.
Predicate clauses with the conjunction чтобы are used when the pronoun такой or таков in the principal clause is preceded by the negative particle.

Affirmative Sentences
Дождь такой, что нельзя выйти.
The rain is not so heavy that it is impossible to go out.
Он такой, что отступит перед первой же трудностью.
He is a man to retreat at the first difficulty

Negative Sentences

Дождь не такой, чтобы нельзя было выйти.
The rain is not so heavy that you cannot go out.
Он не такой, что отступит перед первой же трудностью.
He is not a man to retreat at the first difficulty.

The structure of complex sentences with predicate clauses introduced by the conjunctive words кто and что is similar to that of complex sentences with object or subject clauses introduced by the same conjunctive words.

Я тот, кого вы ждёте.
Пришёл тот, кого мы ждали.
Это то, что я просил.
Он принёс то, что я просил.

I am the one you are waiting for.

The man whom we were waiting for has come.
This is what I asked.
He brought me what I had asked for.

The structure of complex sentences with predicate clauses introduced by the conjunctions что and чтобы and the conjunctive words который and какой is similar to that of complex sentences with attributive clauses introduced by the same conjunctions and conjunctive words.

Дождь такой, что нельзя выйти из дома.
Льёт такой дождь, что нельзя выйти из дома.
Это книга не та, которую я просил.
The rain is so heavy that it is impossible to go out.
It is raining so hard that it is impossible to go out.
This is not the book I asked for.

Exercises 142. Write out the sentences. Underline the predicate clauses. How are the subordinate clauses joined to the principal clauses? What questions do the predicate clauses answer?
