We already have photos from Sam Rock, Del Martin, Buz and his grandson.

Loon on the Line”

This summer Ruby and I spent three delightful days fishing on Lake Kennebago in Maine. The highlight of the last morning fishing was the presence of a large loon that decided to feed in the same area that we fished.

The loon would dive and swim underwater literally within feet of our boat such that we could easily see the white spots on its back as it passed. At least eight times it would pass under the boat to the small bay where we were casting to rising brook trout, make a complete circle and rise again just to the deeper water beyond our boat.

Finally, it pursued one of the brook trout that Ruby had hooked on her white Wulff pattern. The loon grabbed the trout and Ruby had her first “loon on the line”. Well, the loon would let go of the fish when Ruby pulled back on her rod, but as Ruby continued to retrieve her fish, the loon would return to try to get take the fish away. It was a battle of fly fisher versus loon. The last loon attempt was within two feet of the boat side. (I captured several pictures of the scenario, because I thought no one would believe it).

Finally we released the now dead trout to the loon and it went on its way consuming its prey as it swam away.

In the years of fishing in Canada I have observed literally hundreds of loons in their natural surroundings, yet this was the first time one ever fed so close. Perhaps our experience that early morning in Maine was a “once in a lifetime”, but the loon seemed to be quite talented in its ability to both compete for a fish meal and easily recognizing that where there are fly fishers there are fish.
