April 2016 in The Alcove

Seeds, Beads and Reeds

Featuring Joyce Brady, Anne Bulmer

and Maria Hormaza

Artisans on fifth presents "Seeds, Beads and Reeds" throughout the month of April, featuring the works of three of our artists: Joyce Brady, Anne Bulmer and Maria Hormaza.   The opening reception will coincide with Mount Dora's Second Friday Art Stroll, scheduled for Friday, April 8th, from 6-8pm. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Exhibit will continue through April 30 during normal business hours.

Joyce Brady's work includes elements of weaving and embroidery.

Each piece she creates is original and one of a kind. The Jewelry is embellished with beads, featuring semi-precious stones, crystals, pearls, art glass and pewter. Other decorative adornments may include shells, metal pieces, silver/gold/copper leaf, ceramic pieces and terracotta tiles, all designed and assembled to form unique necklaces and coordinating earrings.

Anne Bulmer's baskets come from a variety of influences from all over. This basket set (below, left) is woven from pounded ash. All three nesting baskets have cherry handles and rims.  Her traditional style Nantucket baskets are woven with cane and have cherry handles, rims and bases.

Maria Hormaza has developed her award winning style of bead weaving using crochet technique to create jewelry with semi-precious stones, crystal beads and Seed Beads. She now creates intricate patterns for Lariats and necklaces.  All designs are unique and one of a kind.  She combines the art of weaving with crochet

and handwoven bead work. The Art of weaving with beads using crochet technique, is known since the 1800's. Bead Crochet popularity continued through the 1950's.

Maria's necklace, pictured here is 24k matte gold-plated seed beads with shiny gold-plated Czech fire-polished crystals.

Potter VERSUS Painter

Sharon Repple and her friend, Martin Cushman, are pitting

their individual skills against one another, and have selected various subjects to show their own best interpretations of gators, oranges, birds, wildlife, etc. Sharon, one of Artisans' own, is a painter and Martin is a potter.

Do you love competition? If so, then go see their show at the

Capturing Florida's Beauty on Canvas

EXHIBIT - Runs in the gallery to April 30, 2016

Artist Sharon Osterholt spent 2015 painting on location at each one of the 140 Florida State Parks. The year long tour culminates with a show and sale, featuring all of the State Park paintings in the gallery until April 30th.

Her paintings often depict water and beach scenes, but some others, such as her painting of the Eden Gardens State Park near Destin, show an Antebellum-style home with enormous oaks growing in the front.

Osterholt hopes her art can bring attention to the parks.

"I just really want people to appreciate the old Florida," she said. "A lot of the springs, you can see they're suffering from the development and the pollution that is filtering into the springs. If they never go, they're not going to know, and a lot of it is right in your backyard."

Awesome!

We cannot do it justice here, but new Associate, Mark Wilhelm's photo is a twilight panorama of Lake Minneola and can be seen at Lilly's On The Lake restaurant in Clermont. The digital image was made by stitching together nine vertical photos to make the over 500 megapixel image, an awesome 18 inches high by six feet in length!

No Owner's Manual

Art materials, whether clay, paint, pastels, photos, wood, fabric, graphite, ink or any of hundreds of other tools artists use to express themselves, do not come with operating manuals. What to do? Some of us find a teacher to inspire us; some of us buy books or head for the library. Artists are great collectors of books about other artists and technique.

Much of the work in Artisans on Fifth began as a sketch. Some of our artists will tell you that they have at times been amazed by what began as a scribble led somehow, to a fully realized work of art.

Most of the members at Artisans will also tell you they learned from wonderful teachers. Finally, they will also admit that they failed often, but kept at it.

Come to our shop on Fifth in Mount Dora and if the work of one of our artists inspires you, ask our associate in the shop that day if that artist whose work touches you offers classes. Many do. And, even if an artist does not teach, he or she will probably tell you where you may learn.

Our Community - Mount Dora

We are so proud to be such an integral part of the arts community here in beautiful Mt Dora. Artisans on fifth is only six years old and the possibilities are endless. A big thank you goes out to the people of Mt Dora, and the Mt Dora Center for the Arts for their continued support, we wouldn't be here without them.

We want to say a special thank you to Mount Dora Community Trust for their continued  support of Artisans on fifth through grants & sponsorships. Artisans on fifth believes in supporting our community by giving back through many avenues. These include an annual art scholarship, the Marilyn Dodge Scholarship, for a high school student in the visual arts  and  Bra-Vo, another annual event that raises funds for breast cancer testing and treatment in Lake County.  Mount Dora Community Trust has acknowledged our commitment  to the community through their ongoing support. Our sincere thanks to the Trust for  their  generosity.
