Semasiology is a branch of lexicology that is devoted to study of meaning

Referent approach

  • Referent approach is a combination of 3 things:
  • the sound form is connected with our concept of the word which is denoted with the referent actual word
  • The concept is a category of woman cognition. The result of abstraction and generezation.
  • The meaning of the words are different in different languages.

Functional approach

  • The functional approach maintains that the meaning of a linguistic meaning may be started only though it’s relation to other linguistic units.
  • According to this approach the meaning of the words to move and movement are different, because this word function speech differently.
  • Ex: to move can be followed by noun ( to move a chair)
  • Movement ( movement of a car, slow movement)

Semantic structure of the word

  • It is generally known that most words convey several concepts and thus possess the corresponding number of meaning. Most English words have many meanings. It should be noted that wealth of expressive resources of language.
  • When analysing the semantic structure of a word, it is neccesary to distinguish between two levels of analysis.
  • On the first level, the semantic structure of the word is treated as a system of meanings.
