FOREWORD
Socio-political progress in the Republic of Uzbekistan and the fundamental changes taking
place in all spheres of the country life directly affected the field of the study of foreign languages.
The high degree of relevance of this phenomenon is explained by wide involvement of our country
in the international economic, scientific-technical, cultural, humanitarian and other relations
and a broad integration of the Republic of Uzbekistan in international intergovernmental and
non-governmental organizations’ activities.
In connection with the above, we can refer to the Decree of the President of the Republic of
Uzbekistan PP-1875 of 10 December 2012 «On measures on further improvement of teaching
of foreign languages», which was the essence of the country’s reforms in the field of foreign
language learning. Since the adoption of the system-generating decree all the work in this area
has been intensified and major reforms in modernization of teaching foreign languages at all
levels of continuing education have started. According to the targets set by the Government of
the Republic, new state educational standards, based on international standards – CEFR were
adopted.
From the date of signing of the above mentioned decree a lot of work on the development of
new educational materials and resources in continuing education has been done. In particular,
in the school system a series of textbooks Kids’ English for primary school, as well as in
secondary and specialized education – B1 textbook have been published. Shifts towards modern
methodological approaches in the study of foreign languages have also impacted the higher
education system, ensuring the principles of continuity. Therefore, in 2013, on the initiative of
the Minister of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan
B.Yu. Hodiev the work on developing a set of learning materials for foreign languages meeting
international requirements has been launched. For this, the team of authors, consisting of English
teachers of language and non-language universities in the country has been formed. The team
worked hard on developing the first manual of this kind in the country. Also the First Deputy
Minister of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education F.H. Rizaev, rector of the Uzbek State
University of World Languages Sh.Sh. Kayumov and director of the Republican Scientific
and Practical Center of innovative methods of teaching foreign languages B.E. Ochilov have
been actively involved in the creation of the textbook. In addition, the following people should
be mentioned: the vice-rector for scientific work of the Uzbekistan State World Languages
University prof. G.H. Bakiyeva and the chairman of the Uzbekistan Association of Teachers of
English F.M. Rashidova who have made an invaluable contribution to the development of the
truly innovative language learning manual that meets all modern requirements. In the opinion of
a number of authoritative international experts, this manual is created in line with the Common
European framework of Reference (CEFR), and in certain specific provisions, even better than
some international textbooks as the textbook takes full account of the national mentality and
historical traditions of our people, emphasizing the rich historical past of Uzbek people.
Beyond doubt, the novelty of this textbook is in the development of all language skills:
speaking, listening, reading and writing. Moreover, the thematic content of the manual covers
a big variety of professional fields, which ensures the mastery of the English language of the
future specialists in various spheres of the country economy. This experimental manual will be
piloted for a year that is why any feedback and suggestions from students and teachers will be
particularly valuable for the further improvement.
