AUTHENTIC MATERIALS, AN ALTERNATIVE 
IN ENGLISH CLASSROOM

Abstract: Today English teachers in Indonesia definitely have a lot of alternatives in 
terms of instructional materials. Yet commercial coursebooks has become 
indispensable since it is easier and less time consuming to be used. Some may even 
use a single coursebook and take the students with it throughout the year. They used 
to assume that trustworthy publishers will be a credible materials provider. Thus, 
authentic materials are still considered unpopular. However, language students 
need to be exposed to a representative of the actual language produced by users of 
that language, and using authentic materials is a promising alternative in preparing 
the students to encounter words and constructions that they probably never see in 
the formal situation. These real resources will also help them to understand and use 
English in real life as Nunan (1999: 212) argues that the use of authentic sources 
leads to greater interest and variety in the material that students deal with in the 
classroom. This authentic material helps bring the contact to life, and ultimately 
makes learning and using language more meaningful, and, ultimately, easily for 
students.
