Governor Rell Announces State to Fund Supportive Housing Development in Jewett City
Project Will Serve Homeless, Disabled Veterans
Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced the state is supporting a plan by the local American Legion Post in Jewett City to convert its 19th century brick building into supportive housing for homeless and disabled veterans.
LaFlamme-Kusek Post #15 of the American Legion and its affiliate American Legion Housing, Inc. plans to turn the second and third floors of the Post’s three-storied meeting hall into eight one-bedroom units. The first floor will continue to be used for Post functions, and the basement will be considered for renovation. The Post also has taken an option on an adjacent property allowing for an addition that would house 10 more housing units, an elevator, stairs, administrative offices and common areas.
“The goal of the American Legion Housing project is to create 18 units of permanent supportive rental housing for homeless and low-income individuals in Jewett City, with a particular focus on creating opportunities for homeless veterans,” said Governor Rell. “This is an important project. It meets our housing goals of helping all of Connecticut’s citizens find affordable housing — especially veterans who have sacrificed so much for others — and it is a responsible reuse of an existing asset.”
Funding for the project will come from the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA) as part of the Next Steps initiative and the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD). CHFA will allocate $3,864,126 and DECD plans to offer $500,000 if the project satisfies all federal requirements.
The Next Steps initiative is administrated by the state’s Interagency Council of Supportive Housing, a collaboration between the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA), the Office of Policy and Management, the Department of Social Service, the Department Children and Families, the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and the nonprofit Corporation for Supportive Housing. The group’s goal is to promote the development of supportive housing through a collaborative effort between the various stakeholders, and address not only the shelter needs, but the services needs of this population.
