Exercise 11. Choosing the correct tense. In the conversation between two friends below, put the verbs in brackets ( ) into the present simple or present continuous
A: I hear you are working in a pub at the moment. What's it like?
B: It is fine, although it’s very hard work. I’m always tired, but I don’t mind
A: Is the money good?
B: No, not really, but it likes the hours. You know 1 don’t like working early in the morning.
A: Oh yes, I am remembering. You never used to get up before 11.00.
B: Well, I’m not like that now, but I certainly don’t like getting up before 9.00. Anyway, tell me about you. What are you doing now?
A; I am still a student. I study German at university. Actually, I am working quite hard at the moment because my exams are next week.
I want to be a teacher when I finish at university.
B: Oh well, good luck in your exams. I must go – I start work at 12.00 on Mondays, and I don’t want to be late. I do not have my car any more, so I am cycling everywhere at the moment.
Exercise 12. Writing about developments. Change the text below so that it is true about developments in your country. Use verbs in the present continuous and underline the word in italics that you want. Use the verbs in the box if you want to. You can use the verbs more than once.
In my country many things are changing. The population is increasing, and the number of unemployed people are going up. Young people are leaving home earlier , and are geting married earlier than before. People are earning more money these days, while the cost of living is rising Our capital city __bigger / smaller, the number of people with cars are rising and traffic pproblems are getting worse. Overall, I think life in my country is getting worse for most people.

Debbie works as an administrator at the university.
She organises all the timetables and teaching schedules. She is working very long hours at the moment because it’s the start of the academic year but she is going on a short holiday at the end of the month.
Simon and Sylvia stay in a cottage in the Yorkshire Dales this month.
The cottage belongs to a cousin of Sylvia’s but the cousin is away: she is cycling around Norfolk for a few weeks. Simon and Sylvia often use the cottage when Sylvia's cousin is away. They really enjoy being in the middle of the countryside.
The International School for Languages is working very well at the moment. About two hundred students take evening classes this term. Many of them need to learn a new language to improve their job prospects but some of them is learning a new language purely for pleasure. The European languages are very popular but Japanese and Russian are getting more popular too. The school provides good learning facilities and organises a range of study tours.
The world population are still increasing rapidly. Many people in the world already streve and many more suffer from malnutrition. The population is growing fastest in the poorest countries where people need to have children to look after them in their old age and where many of their childrn are dying at a very young age.
