The Organs of Speech

The organs which take an immediate part in the formation of speech sound are called the organs of speech. The types of speech organs are as follows:

   The upper and lower lips;

   The palate (the roof of the mouth);

The palate is divided into the following parts:

a. The teeth - ridge or the alveoli

b. The hard palate (palatum)

c. The soft palate (velum)

The extreme part of the soft palate is called the uvula. The uvula doesn’t take part in the formation of speech sounds. But it can block the way either to the mouth cavity or to the nasal cavity. The tongue is also divided into three parts which lie opposite each part of the palate. They are as follows:
