Task 1. Study the main principles of vowel classification.

A. The main principles of vowel classification.

From the theoretical point of view vowels are classified according to seven principles in English [Abduazizov A. English Phonetics]. Four principles of vowel classification among the existing seven are very important in practical value. They are vowel classification according to:



  1. the position of the tongue;

  2. the position of the lips;

  3. length of the vowel;

  4. the degree of tenseness.


B. Vowel classification according to the position of the tongue.

In the production of vowel phonemes the tongue may move in a horizontal direction and in a vertical direction.



According to the horizontal movement of the tongue vowels are classified into the following:


According to the vertical movement of the tongue vowels are classified into the following:


  1. front vowels [i:, e:, æ]

  2. front - retracted vowels [i]

  3. central vowels [ʌ, ә:, ә]

  4. back vowels [u:, з:, ә]

  5. back-advanced vowels [a:,u]




  1. high [i:, u:, u, i]

  2. low [a, ә, ʌ, æ]

  3. mid [e, ә:, ә, ɔ:]

D. Vowel classification:

according to their length the vowels may be:

English vowels are divided into the following types according to the stability of the speech organs: monophthongs, diphthongs, diphthongoids.

A monophthong is a pure vowel. During the pronunciation of it the position of the speech organs keeps its stability. English monophthongs are: /ı/, /u/, /з:/, /ʌ/, /ɔ/, /æ/, /e/, /ә/, /a:/, /ɔ:/.

A diphthong is a vowel sound in which the tongue changes position to produce the sound of two vowels . English diphthongs are: /eı/, /aı/, /ɔı/, /au/, /әu/, /ıә/, /eә/, /uә/.

A diphthongoid is a diphthongized vowel. English diphthongoids are: /ı:/, /u:/.
Task 2. Read the following pairs of words and identify the type of vowels which differentiate the meaning of words.
