C. Study the qualitative and quantitative changes of a phoneme.

Two types of phoneme variants may be differentiated according to the qualitative and quantitative changes of a phoneme. They are allophones and allochrones. Allophones are the variants of the phoneme which underwent the qualitative changes whereas allochrones are the variants of the phoneme which underwent the quantitative changes [2, 46].
