WHY DO WE LEARN ENGLISH LANGUAGE?

People  began  to  speak  many  centuries  ago,  and  since  then  they  have  been  speaking  different 
languages. Every language reflects the soul, behavior and temperament of each nationality. People created 
their own alphabets and rules, but they always wanted to communicate with each other. Languages help 
people to understand and to know more about each other. Languages help people to understand each other 
better, they help them to solve different economic and political problems. Nowadays, a lot of people study 
English  language  in  every  possible  way.  Foreign-language  study  groups  are  organized  at  industrial 
enterprises, at the offices of big firms, at the educational establishments, at research institutes. Year by year 
the globe is getting smaller with the development of communication means and increase in transportation 
velocities. People of different countries and nations have to get along well with the progress in world trade 
and technology as well as with each other. “Knowledge is power”, one of the great men said. 
Speaking  a  foreign  language  one  can  not  only  read  the  papers,  magazines  and  original  books  by 
outstanding writers, but as well watch satellite TV programs, travel easily in the different parts of the world. 
Besides, understanding and speaking a foreign language or two became necessary while applying for a good 
and well-paid job. In our country English is very popular. It is studied at schools (sometimes even at nursery 
schools),  colleges  and  universities.  Learning  English  is  not  an  easy  thing  as  it  takes  a  lot  of  time  and 
patience. Sometimes it is boring to study grammar or to learn new words, but it is well known that reading 
books  in  the  original,  listening  to  the  BBC  news,  communicating  with  the  English  speaking  people  will 
help a lot. Fortunately, I began learning English even before I could understand it.  
XXI century professional no matter what job to choose. I try to read books, poems of English writers, 
I learn poems by heart and 10 words daily, I try to translate English songs. I also want to use English in my 
future job, because I want to become a professional English teacher. I learn English because I want to read

Charles Dickens and Oscar Wilde in their native language. I like Hemingway and Agatha Christie. Besides, 
I  like  to  travel.  But  it  is  difficult  to  visit  countries,  when  you  do  not  know  the  language  of  the  country, 
where I am going to, it will be easy to travel there, if I want to ask something, I can do it in English. I like 
to talk and make friends with people from different countries. I have many foreign friends in social sites as 
facebook and so on. 
Now I have much fun writing letters to my American and British pen friends. I hope, some day we 
shall meet each other and have a good time. All languages are different. Some are very difficult, some are 
easy, some are similar, but there are no identical languages in the whole world. There are more than 7000 
languages in the world. Most of them are “alive” because people use them, but there are “dead” languages, 
for example, Latin was the world’s most important international language two thousands years ago. Today 
this title belongs to English. Over two billion people speak English. 
That’s  almost  one  fifth  of  the  world’s  population.  For  over  800  million  inhabitants’  it  is  the  first 
language. For other 1200 million it’s either a second language or a foreign language. Today, in fact, over 
550  million  people  are  learning  English.  That’s  more  than  the  population  of  the  USA.  English,  is  an 
international language in the world. Most people are using this language in the daily life. Knowing English 
has  lots  of  benefits  not  only  in  communication,  but  it  also  helps  to  improve  the  development  in  all  the 
spheres. 
 
 
Learning English takes an important and valuable part of a person’s education, especially for people 
working in companies using English as a main language. 
There  are  many  explanations  for  the  importance  of  learning  English:  1)  Learning  English  helps 
people communicate and travel easily. 2) Learning English is a good opportunity for your career. As you 
can  get  more  opportunities  to  cooperate  with  the  customers  and  partners  from  different  countries,  using 
language without barriers. 3) Understanding documents relating to your job. 4) Understanding the English 
language may help you to get acquainted with the worlds’ heritage of literature. 5) English is the language 
of the media industry. If you speak English, you will not need to rely on translations and subtitles anymore, 
enjoy  your  favorite  books,  songs,  films  and  TV  shows.  6)  English  is  also  the  language  of  the  Internet. 
Majority of websites use English – so you will be able to take part in forums and discussions. 7) English is 
based  on  a  simple  alphabet  and  it  is  fairly  quick  and  easy  to  learn  compared  to  other  languages.  8)  By 
learning English, you will also learn about other cultures. Few experiences will make you grow as a person 
more than learning the values, habits and way of life in a culture that is different from yours. Today, there 
are many people all over the world study English. 
Most of them think that maybe English becomes their second language. But have you ever wondered: 
“Why do we need to learn English?”. I am sure that it is very necessary and important to learn English now, 
because English is the language of the planet. Now, I would like to say some words about the history of 
this language. The rise of English is a story  of wonderful success. When Julies Caesar landed in the 5th 
century, English was already spoken by people, who inhabited Great Britain, but they were not many and 
their  English  was  not  the  language  we  know  today.  Nearly  thousand  years  later,  at  the  end  of  the  16th 
century  when  William  Shakespeare  created  his  works,  English  was  the  native  language  about  6  million 
Englishmen. At the time English was not used anywhere else except Great Britain, but now English is the 
main language of international aviation, shipping and the major language of diplomacy. In order to have a 
good job one should know foreign languages. One of the most widespread language in the world is English. 
But every well-educated person in the world speaks English, because it is the language of communication, 
business, science and culture. 
English is now the most important and popular language in the world. It is the state language in five 
countries: Great Britain, Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. English is one of the six official 
and  working  languages  of  the  United  Nations.  It  is  the  second  working  language  in  the  European 
Community. In many Asian and African countries, such as India or Egypt, in former British colonies people 
speak English besides their native one. People also speak English in Europe. English is spoken practically 
all over the world. In a word, I understand that I have to learn English hard in a proper way. 
I think English is worth studying. There is a proverb “A new language – a new world”. So I can say 
that English is absolutely necessary to know for every educated person, for every good specialist today. In 
conclusion,  we  will  know  learning  English  can  get  three  major  benefits,  which  are  becoming  an 
international person, communicating with any people in the world, and improving the changes in the job.
