Activity 3 Types of articles
Objective: to raise students’ awareness of different types of an article
Time: 15 minutes
Materials: Handout 3, 5 articles representing different types. Sample articles:

  • Stannard R. (2007). Sound Instruction. In English Teaching Professional, Issue 49, March – case study

  • Shapira A. (2007). Reading in phases. In English Teaching Professional, Issue 49, March - proposal

  • Oxendine, C., Robinson, J., & Willson, G. (2004). Experiential learning. In M. Orey (Ed.), Emerging perspectives on learning, teaching, and technology. Retrieved <24.10.2014>, from http://epltt.coe.uga.edu/ - survey

  • Beaven, B. (2004). From teacher to teacher trainer. In English Teaching Professional, Issue 33, July – research report

  • Fields M. (2007). Rediscovering dictation. In English Teaching Professional, Issue 49, March – opinion-based.

Procedure:

  • Tell participants that they will explore different types of English Language Teaching (ELT) professional articles. Identifying types of articles might facilitate the reading process, note-taking and summarizing.

      • Divide participants into 4 groups. Distribute each group the 5 articles and copies of handout 3 to each participant. Ask groups to categorize the articles and give reasons for their answers.

      • Ask groups to present their answers to the whole group.



Home assignment

      • Say that there are some other possible frameworks for articles discussions that will help them read and respond to professional articles. Distribute Handout 4 to students. Ask them to examine the frameworks for taking notes on professional articles.

      • Ask them to choose an article of their interest from ELT journals and magazines (e.g. English Teaching Professional, Modern English Teacher, etc.)

      • Read the chosen article and take notes using one of the suggested frameworks.
