speaker 1:  Politicians really could do a lot more about 
the waste of resources. But it’s also up 
to individuals to do their bit. It causes 
me great annoyance that I’m unable to 
change things on a large-scale – there’s 
so much unnecessary rubbish building up 
everywhere. Anyway, I decided to enquire 
into joining a local environmental group 
involved in doing things on a minor level. 
Although people in the group argue about 
how to tackle the problem, we do our best 
to get things recycled that might otherwise 
end up in the sea or strewn around the 
countryside. It’s a source of pleasure 
to have a regular activity on a weekly 
basis that’s aimed at actually trying to do 
something. 
speaker 2:  One thing that can help the environment is 
to eat less meat – so many of the world’s 
resources go into producing it – and it’s 
very heartening to hear of the number 
of people switching to vegetarian and 
vegan diets. It’s a sign that change is on 
the way and people are waking up to the 
need to take care of our planet. I was 
strongly advised against going vegan 
by some people who said it was a big 
mistake, and food would cost more, but 
that doesn’t seem to be true. Actually, 
it’s been fantastic how friends have taken 
the trouble to make special meals for me, 
though I still miss meat sometimes. 
speaker 3:  I honestly believe we have a real hope of 
saving our environment. Most people I 
know find it rewarding, as I do myself, to 
feel that they aren’t doing some of things 
that are terrible for the environment like 
flying and driving excessively, but it is up 
to the authorities to adopt the right course 
of action. If governments implement 
what they talk about, then real change is 
possible. I’m inclined to think that progress 
is starting in that respect after some 
mistaken strategies. Big businesses also 
have a lot of power, and so do journalists 
who write about climate change and 
influence the public debate.
