Railway and Miller Street Reserve Proposed Landscape Plan – Option B
(City of Melbourne, May 2013)
This image shows the proposed Option B design for the West Melbourne park expansion project bounded by Miller Street to the north and south of Dynon Road including the Dynon Road Bridge, Laurens Street to the west, Anderson Street to the east and the small reserve on the corner of Dryburgh and Spencer streets south-west of the intersection.
The main aspect of this proposal is maximising open space provisions with a reduction in car parking in the area to achieve this. Anderson and Stawell streets are proposed to become dead-ends but both will be two-way streets. Access and connectivity between the small reserve on the corner of Spencer and Dryburgh street and the main park would be realised and pedestrian safety improved significantly. Parallel parking is proposed to be retained and expanded in Stawell Street with removal of any angle parking and a treed median proposed with parking retained on the east side of the street. In Anderson Street it is proposed to retain parallel parking on both sides of the street. No change to parking in Ireland Street is proposed.
Included in the design between Dynon Road and Miller Street (north) is an open lawn area for informal use within Laurens Street. The design retains three existing trees in the existing lawn with the addition of tree planting in two rows north to south in Laurens Street. The access paths to Anderson Street north and the bus stop on Dynon Road bridge (north side) are to be retained.
South of Dynon Road bridge and between Anderson Street (south) will retain the existing lawn, trees and paths. A new lawn area with two rows of tree planting is proposed to be created in the road that is Laurens Street/Railway Place from Dynon road to Anderson Street. Access will be maintained to the Metro Work depot.
Pedestrian access is proposed to be maintained along the east and west edge of Laurens Street and Railway Place except the road is proposed to be lawn. The area under Dynon road is not defined.
A new section of park is proposed to be created between Dryburgh and Anderson streets on Miller Street south. This effectively dead-ends Anderson and Stawell Streets however they will remain two way streets. This section of the park includes a pedestrian path from Dryburgh to Anderson Streets connecting into the network of paths for the park and tree planting along the linear park. There is no requirement to cross roads in the park.
Streetscape works are proposed in Stawell Street with the addition of a treed median and planting in the footpath on the east side of the street. Medians in Ireland Street are proposed to be extended with planting in the footpath to improve canopy cover in the area. Anderson is proposed to have additional street trees on both sides.
