Railway and Miller Street Reserve Proposed Landscape Plan – Option A
(City of Melbourne, May 2013)
This image shows the proposed Option A design for the West Melbourne park expansion project bounded by Miller Street to the north and south of Dynon Road including the Dynon Road Bridge, Laurens Street to the west, Anderson Street to the east and the small reserve on the corner of Dryburgh and Spencer streets south-west of the intersection.
The main aspect of this proposal is a one –way system for traffic circulation which maximises retention of car parking in the area but reduces the amount of open space to accommodate this. The access and connectivity between the small reserve on the corner of Spencer and Dryburgh street and the main park is not realised and there is some pedestrian safety issues are not effectively addressed. Angle parking is proposed to be retained and expanded in Stawell Street but no room for a treed median and paralle; parking retained on the east side of the street. In Anderson Street it is proposed to have perpendicular parking to the kerb on the east side and retain parallel parking on the west side. No change to parking in Ireland Street is proposed.
Included in the design between Dynon Road and Miller Street (north) is an open lawn area for informal use within Laurens Street. The design retains three existing trees in the existing lawn with the addition of tree planting in two rows north to south in Laurens Street. The access paths to Anderson Street north and the bus stop on Dynon Road bridge (north side) are to be retained.
South of Dynon Road bridge and between Anderson Street (south) will retain the existing lawn, trees and paths. A new lawn area with two rows of tree planting is proposed to be created in the road that is Laurens Street/Railway Place from Dynon road to Anderson Street. Access will be maintained to the Metro Work depot.
Pedestrian access is proposed to be maintained along the east and west edge of Laurens Street and Railway Place except the road is proposed to be lawn. The area under Dynon road is not defined.
A new section of park is proposed to be created between Dryburgh and Stawell streets on Miller Street south. A one-way connection between Anderson and Stawell Streets is proposed with one-way north bound traffic in Stawell Street and one-way south bound traffic in Anderson Street. This section of the park includes a pedestrian path from Dryburgh to Stawell Streets with tree planting. Pedestrians will need to cross Stawell Street to access a footpath on Miller Street (south) and then cross the road at Anderson Street again to get to the western section of the park and Laurens Street.
Streetscape works proposed in Stawell Street is the expansion of angle parking. A treed median is not possible however there is street tree planting in the footpath on both sides of the street. Medians in Ireland Street are proposed to be extended with planting in the footpath to improve canopy cover in the area. Anderson is proposed to have additional street trees on both sides.
