West Melbourne Park Expansion Design Plan
West Melbourne Park Expansion, Railway and Miller Street
City Of Melbourne, City Design
This image shows the detailed design for the West Melbourne park expansion project bounded by Miller Street to the north and south of Dynon Road including the Dynon Road Bridge, Laurens Street to the west, Anderson Street to the east and the small reserve on the corner of Dryburgh and Spencer streets south-west of the intersection.
Included in the design between Dynon Road and Miller Street (north) is an open lawn area for informal use which retains three existing trees with addition of two new trees. The access paths to Anderson Street north and the bus stop on Dynon Road Bridge (north side) have been retained. A shared pedestrian/cyclist path has been introduced along the west boundary of the new park from Laurens to Ireland streets and under Dynon Road Bridge. A multi-purpose area will be located under Dynon Road Bridge and sits between the shared path to the west and a pedestrian path to the east.
South of Dynon Road Bridge and between Anderson Street (south) will be the continuation of the shared path along the west boundary of the park. An open lawn area for informal use that makes up the park here is bi-sected by a pedestrian path providing access between the multi-purpose area and Dynon Road overpass to the west and Dryburg/Spencer streets intersection to the east. Two existing trees have been retained and there is some new tree planting in and around the edges of the park. Along the east edge of the park next to Anderson Street is a granitic gravel path with park seating.
A new section of park has been created between Dryburgh and Anderson streets on Miller Street south. This effectively dead-ends Anderson and Stawell streets. This section of the park includes a pedestrian path from Dryburgh to Anderson Streets connecting into the network of paths for the park, a rain garden/Water Sensitive Urban Design treatment for cleaning stormwater, tree planting along the linear park and a partially fenced dog-off leash park on the corner of Dryburgh and Spencer streets.
Additional streetscape works will be also undertaken in Stawell Street with the addition of a treed median, kerb extension on the corner of Stawell and Ireland streets outside the Railway Hotel building and planting in the footpath either side of the street to improve canopy cover in the area. Medians in Ireland Street will be extended and planting in the footpath either side of the street to improve canopy cover in the area.
