Strategic Alliance for Health

The Strategic Alliance for Health (SAH) is a partnership of Sowing Seeds of Hope (SSOH) and the Alabama Department of Public Health with grant funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The program focuses on the promotion of physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco cessation in an effort to prevent obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Throughout this five year initiative, SSOH and SAH are supporting community health projects that meet standards for implementing long-term change.

2012 PERRY COUNTY PROJECTS:

• 
  Auburn Rural Studio: An ongoing partnership exists with City of Uniontown for making improvements at Uniontown Park. This phase will include a playground area and trash receptacles.
  
• 
  East Perry Improvement Association: This is an area of Perry County that has not been impacted by SAH funds in previous years. This project will support enhancements to the East Perry Park, which will include a playground area and a water fountain.
  
• 
  First Baptist Church Nurses Guild: The guild is a health ministry of First Baptist of Uniontown. Funds will support the purchase of small fitness equipment and videos that may be utilized for the group exercise component of their ministry.
  
• 
  Judson College: Plans are underway to implement a Tobacco Free policy for the next academic year. SAH funds will be used to provide cessation training for instructors as well as equipment for an outdoor volleyball court and indoor water aerobics to promote physical activity as an alternative to smoking.
  
• 
  Perry County Schools: SAH funds will be used to train physical education teachers on fitness testing requirements for students and for equipment for all schools to implement the 2011 Alabama Physical Education Instructional Guide.
  

Self-Help Housing Program



What is it?
Self-Help Housing is an affordable opportunity for a low-income family to own a custom-designed home. Similar to Habitat for Humanity, the families must qualify for a low-interest loan and help to build the house.

How it works
Rural Development, an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture, makes the program Self Help Housing available to local governments and non-profits such as Sowing Seeds of Hope. Rural Development awards us a grant to administer the program, and they make the loans to the families. The loans are typically between $50,000 and $94,000.

Once qualified, they become a part of group of 5-10 families that will build together. We help them to find land if they don't already own a lot. Then we design their house through a participatory process of 5 meetings that starts with a tour of their existing home and a questionnaire. This inspires a series of floor plans and models, with the final result being a house plan that was created to meet their particular needs and wants.
