There are five components generally recognized by educators in 
analysis  of  the  oral  speech  process:  1)  pronunciation,  including 
segmental features, vowels and consonants, the stress and intonation 
patterns; 2) grammar; 3) vocabulary; 4) fluency; 5) comprehension. 
These  components  can  be  taken  as  macro-criteria  for  testing 
students’ speaking performance.  
Three  frameworks  about  general  purposes  of  testing  oral  skills 
were  suggested:  1)  linguistically-oriented,  2)  communication-
oriented, 3) situation-based.
