INTRODUCTION
Drama is a literary genre which allows actors to perform a written dialogue and stage action. In dramas, actors should act out a work’s words directly to an audience. Drama involves conflicts and emotions of characters through action and dialogue. There are four types of drama:
Comedy
Tragedy
Tragicomedy
Melodrama
Each of them developed at different period, however, all of them have their characteristics. Drama is represented in performance: plays ,operas , ballets , mimes , etc. The term drama comes from a Greek word and it means “ action”.This course work is mainly dedicated to a play( theatre).
A play is a work of the genre drama. It usually consists of dialogue between characters and it was intended for theatrical performance rather than just reading. The writer of plays is playwrights. Moreover , plays are performed at a variety of levels, such as London’s West End and Broadway in New York. These are the highest level of commercial theatre in the English-speaking countries – to regional theatre , to community theatre, as well as university or school production. There are great dramatists, notably George Bernard Shaw, who had little preference as to whether their plays were performed or read. The term ‘play’ refer to both written words of playwrights and to their complete theatrical performance.
The main features of a play script:
A list of characters in the beginning of the work
The text is divided into acts, then, it is divided into scenes
A description of setting before each scene
Dialogue lines are the main vehicle of moving the story forward
A character’s name precedes a line of the dialogue
Speech marks are not used to signify dialogue
Stage directions are utilized to instruct actors on how to act and what to do
The aim of this course work is to take the most important information about one of the most popular playwright George Bernard Shaw and his works and to analyze the given work and give our own opinion about it.
In order to achieve the aim of this research work we set up several tasks:
To search information about the writer from some internet sites and literatures
To learn out Shaw’s life and his famous works
To read one of his famous play “ Pygmalion”
To analyze Structural and stylistic peculiarities of the play
To identify main themes and the gist of the work
