12. I. I went to the fifth form in 1948. To be precise – I was driven there. Our village only had a
primary school, so to continue my education I needed to get 50 kilometres from home to the
regional centre.
13. 1. At the beginning of the school year, the teacher gave us a homework essay on the topic ‘Is
it useful to know foreign languages?’.
2. The five-point marking scale uses the following marks: one (very bad), two (bad), three
(satisfactory), four (good), five (excellent), for example: she gets straight fives.
3. After the October Revolution of 1917, V. I. Lenin, under the slogan of ‘To learn, to learn
and to learn’, wanted illiterate people to learn how to write and read, so that all Soviet
citizens would get a decent education. The ‘Likbez’ (elimination of illiteracy, 1920–35)
campaign was initiated and by 1939 over 80 per cent of the population was literate.
4. Having finished a 4–6-year course at one of the university faculties, students are awarded
a university degree. They can continue studying for the degree of ‘kandidat nauk’ and
for a doctorate.
5. Having learnt one of the Slavic languages, it is not difficult to learn another, as the Slavic
languages have only existed as separate languages for just over 1,000 years and so they
still maintain many similarities (for example, in vocabulary and grammar).

1. Some experts give preference to co-education as boys and girls will be living
together on our planet for their whole adult life, others prefer single-sex schooling,
especially as the boys don’t give girls a chance to speak at joint lessons.

mathematicians such as N. I. Lobachevsky (1792–1856), professor of Mathematics
and rector of Kazan University, proved the opposite. Only after Lobachevsky’s

government officials, were focused on the decentralisation of the educational system and
elimination of the remnants of the Soviet system. For example, history was taught and
studied from different points of view.

7. In surveys carried out under the aegis of the All-Russian Central Institute of Public
Opinion, Russians invariably claim that their educational level is high. And indeed, out
of every thousand people aged 15 and over, 133 have higher education. Comparing this
figure to the situation at the beginning of the 20th century, it turns out that for every
literate person at the age of nine there were three illiterate.
8. Why aren’t there enough school teachers in the Russian Federation? First of all, this is
explained by the low level of salaries: many teachers retrained as translators or
accountants. However, the situation has improved compared the 1980s, when 21% of
schools did not have central heating and 30% did not have running water.
9. Out of 6 and a half million students, more than half are paying for their education, and
in the state universities the fees are higher than in private educational establishments.
Out of 18 million pupils, 69,000 attend fee-paying teaching establishments. State
schools also collect money: for presents for teachers, for security guards and repairs, for
graduation parties (a school-leaving party costs 1,000 roubles on average).
