years after his divorce from the Princess of Wales and her death in an accident in Paris.
His new wife was also getting married for the second time, to a person she had fallen in
love with more than 30 years ago.

988, Kievan Russia adopted the Orthodox religion. It is said that at the time
representatives of a number of world religions visited Kiev: of Islam, Judaism,
Catholicism, and Orthodoxy. The Grand Prince of Kiev did not like the Jews’ abstention
from pork and the abstention of Muslims from alcohol. In any case, economic and other
links between Russia and Byzantium were so strong that the Grand Prince could not
avoid adopting Orthodoxy.
3. Easter is the most popular festival of the religious year. Believers fast, pray all night long,
and after the Easter service say ‘Christ has risen! – Risen indeed!’ to each other. For
Easter people eat eggs, normally painted red, and also ‘paskha’ (a sweet dish in the shape
of a pyramid) and ‘kulich’ (sweet white bread). Easter in Russia is not always celebrated
on the same Sunday as in the West.
4. Christmas in Russia is celebrated not on 25 December, as in the majority of Western
countries, but on 7 January, the reason for which is the switch from the Julian calendar to
the Gregorian one in the time of Peter the Great.
5. In the 1920s children’s religious education in Russia was considered to be
anti-communist propaganda. Churches were destroyed, many believers were subjected
to repression.

2. In modern Russia, church weddings have come back into fashion (but it is obligatory
to get married in the registry office as well). After the wedding, the newly-weds are
driven round the main sights of the city in a car. A trip round Moscow ends by the
