1.1 History and development of ELT
Uzbekistan mainly through English Language Teaching (ELT) specialists and its potential was explored solely in connection with ELT. As a result, the prevailing view with ELT. Nearly a decade after the discipline's emergence in Uzbekistan 2007s, the focus of applied linguistics shifted 2from ELT to the application of linguistics to solve problems in society, and then to a more interdisciplinary approach to solving problems related to linguistics. communication, including language. In this article, the author uses a reflective narrative to discuss the development of academic discipline, focusing on its relationship with ELT: to clarify the position of ELT in applied linguistics in Uzbekistan, past, present and future. The history of English teaching is often presented from a methodological point of view, implying that newer or more recent approaches to language teaching were or are in some way superior to what was or was before. A more reasonable approach is to try to see the development of ELT not as a competition between methodologies, but as a development from methodology to methodology with more overlap when compared to teaching materials design in particular. There are two common ways to define an English language teaching methodology and graphically they look like this:
Approach is simply a set of principles or ideas about the nature of language learning, and was similar but clearly divided into theories about what a language is and theories about how a foreign language is learned. The advantage of the second of these definitions is that it is fairly clear.
Design − Describes the plan for presenting the language that is consistent with the approach. The concept of design is somewhat broader and covers practical aspects in the classroom: curriculum design, activities and roles of teachers and students. They aren't all that different, but again, the last one is more explicit.
Procedure is simply any teaching way to do something in the classroom, such as calling, getting closer to reading a text, encouraging authentic speech, coaching, and so on. The term “procedure” refers to what we see in the classroom as a specific approach and plan is implemented every day.It is an understandable trend, not limited to the teaching of English, that views the history and development of any field of study as if it were a slow (or even fairly quick) transition from the dark ages of ignorance and superstition to the light of modern science. and understanding. The consequence of this is to view the history of the profession as a history marked by insights and paradigm shifts brought about by the work of several great thinkers and authorities. We get a view that looks a bit like a jagged but constantly rising line with unexpected discoveries and new directions at every curve in the graph. This is a trend and a point of view that we should beware of. No academic field develops in this way.The best way to visualize the development of English language teaching is to view it as a series of overlapping threads that intertwine from time to time and then diverge again. Thus, for example, in the 16th and 17th centuries the focus was on functional language, but with the growing interest in laying down prescriptions for grammatical language, the emphasis shifted to the form and teaching of vocabulary along with a series of translations. In other words, this field did not develop in a smooth curve, leaving behind discarded theories and moving forward and upward towards the light, but rather emphasizing different aspects of language and learning at different times, conditioned by the culture of the eras in which people lived. working. The teaching of languages has been greatly influenced by the innovations made in science and technology. Academic research in the 21st century has focused on the latest innovations. We can observe various changes in the forms and methods of education. Modern language pedagogy is leaning towards integrated pedagogy using ICT3. It is a form of learning that is supported by the use of carefully designed tools. Integrated ICT-enabled learning is an interactive way of learning that overuses ICT. This usually includes interactive learning with online support and the use of technical tools between teachers, students and peers. In Nepalese academic circles, English is taught as a foreign language. It is used for various purposes such as international communication, an international degree in English, and as a medium of instruction. The latest approaches to ELT are technology based. It is often said that the 21st century is the age of science and technology. In a sense, we can consider that the whole world is taken over by technology, and we cannot even carry out our daily activities without these tools. Teachers can integrate technology or use electronic devices to design and tailor learning materials to better meet the needs of individual students. Nowadays, electronic devices affect every aspect of life; therefore, in the modern world of computers, the Internet and other electronic forms are becoming an integral part of the ELT.
