Annatation: Teach language learning strategies and emphasize that a given strategy can
often enhance performance in multiple skills.
Key words: (efl) english as a foreign language, integrated skills, listening, writing,
speaking and reading, classroom, methodology, to combine, of syntax, vocabulary, continuity,
realism, Variety, recycling, appropriateness, confidence, attention, principally.
so first i would like to speak about the term integrated skills. integrated skills mean to the
interaction of the four main language skills all together during instruction or integration of skills
can be defined as the combination of two or more skills within a communicative task. as we
know these skills are: listening, writing, speaking and reading.
By integrating skills we make classroom work closer to real life. in addition, some concrete
reasons are given in some sources on methodology. They are:
-- continuity
-- realism
-- appropriateness
-- Variety
-- recycling
-- confidence
in our language classes we can integrate two skills as it is suggested here:
- listening and speaking
- listening and reading
- reading and writing
- speaking and writing
- listening and writing.
or if you want to combine more than two skills, some useful sequences are the following:
- speaking → reading →Writing →speaking ( →Writing)
- listening → Writing → speaking → Writing
- reading → Writing → listening →speaking (→ Writing)
- listening →speaking → reading → Writing
The approach integrated-skill has several advantages, for example i can count several of them.
first is english language learners will be given the chance to use authentic language and challenges
them to interact naturally in the language. second is learners rapidly gain a true picture of the
richness and complexity of the english language as employed for communication. Moreover, this
approach stresses that english is not just an object of academic interest nor merely a key to passing
an examination; instead, english becomes a real means of interaction and sharing among people.
This approach allows teachers to track students’ progress in multiple skills at the same time.
integrating the language skills also promotes the learning of real content, not just the dissection
of language forms. finally, the integrated-skill approach, whether found in content-based or task-
based language instruction or some hybrid form, can be highly motivating to students of all ages
and backgrounds.
There are two forms of integrated-skills:
• content-based instruction
• Task-based instruction
at least 3 general models of content-based instruction exist in integrated skills:
n it integrates the language skills into the study of a theme which must be very interesting to
learners and must allow a wide variety of language skills to be practiced.
n sheltered model.
n The subject matter is taught in simplified english according to the students’ english
