Preparation: do necessary preparations for activity 3
1. Lead in Objective: to prepare participants for the session
Time: 10 minutes
Materials: Handout 1
Interaction: plenary
Preparation:before the session cut cards from Handout 1
Procedure:
Say that participants will do an activity called ‘Find someone who’. Refer to the session Teaching Grammar where they did a similar activity and ask participants to explain the principles of the activity. If they hesitate, remind them that each of them will get a card with different questions. Explain that they should stand up, mingle, find different people who will say ‘yes’ to their questions and write the names of these people in a special column. Give them 5 minutes.
Stop the activity and ask participants to take their places.
To check the activity ask participants to say the name of a person who answered ‘yes’ to the questions you will read aloud and check the information by asking those people whether the information is correct.
Ask participants to guess the topic of today’s session and write it on the board.
2. Practising speaking activities Objective: to explore different speaking activities
Time: 25 minutes
Materials: Handout 2, Handout 3
Interaction: pair work, group work, plenary
Procedure:
Say to participants that they are going to experience some speaking activities as pupils, not teachers.
Picture Description (5 minutes)
Say that the activity is called Picture description. Give each group a box with buttons. Explain that each group will get a picture. Groups should describe the picture. Say that in groups participants should make up as many sentences describing this picture as possible. Ask them not to pay attention to possible mistakes. Ask to choose the most active person in a group to be a secretary. The secretary does not make any sentences, but ticks each new sentence of other members in a notebook without writing sentences down. Say that a participant making up a sentence takes a button from the box, so at the end of the activity the contribution of each member of the group is clear by a number of buttons s/he has near her/him. It is important that all the participants have an approximately equal number of buttons. Give them 4 minutes.
Change a dialogue (10 minutes)
Explain that participants will be using a dialogue from Fly High English 6 textbook. Ask them to read the dialogue to themselves and discuss in pairs which information they can change. Give them 2 minutes.Distribute Handout 3.
Elicit participants’ ideas.
