PRACTICAL LESSON 2. REVIEW ON HISTORY OF METHODS OF TEACHING FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Objective: in this practical lesson Ss gain a practical understanding of grammar translation and audio-lingual methods and learn when to use them appropriately.
Key terms: grammar translation method, audio-lingual method, drilling, deductive and inductive methods.
Key concepts: GTM focuses on grammatical rules, memorization of vocabulary, translation of texts and written exercises.
ALM is grounded in linguistic and psychological theory that advocates habit formation models of learning.
A difficult problem for teachers is to select the instructional method that best fits their personal teaching style and their teaching context.
Problems and activities for disscussion in the practical lesson
• Ss experience and reflect on a lesson using the grammar –translation method.
• Ss experience and reflect on a lesson using the audio-lingual method
• Ss analyze the methods of teaching from different perspectives
Note: Ss will work with the activities on p. 197-204 the book Becoming a teacher, K. Alimova, N. Mukhammedova, B. Brewerton.
Teaching foreign languages in Uzbekistan
Objective: in this practical lesson Ss gain a practical understanding of the periods Teaching foreign languages in Uzbekistan.
Key terms: periods, changes after independent, challenging, scientific works, National curriculum, FL textbooks.
Key concepts: The historical review of teaching foreign languages in settlements of Uzbeks at ancient times.
The main periods of teaching foreign languages in Uzbekistan.
Some innovations that are introduced into the FLT in Uzbekistan at present.
Problems and activities for disscussion in the practical lesson
• What are the main periods in the history of FL methodology development?
• What were the main features of the first and second periods?
• When was the first NATIONAL CURRICULUM elaborated?
• Is it necessary to take into consideration the native language in FLT? Give your arguments?
• What innovations are introduced into FLT in Uzbekistan nowadays?
Note: T. asks Ss to study the historical survey of FLT in Uzbekistan and to find the additional information and prepare the presentation.
T. gives the task to Ss about scientific reasearches done in the FL methodology and their contribution into the theory and practice of FLT.
