Positive Development From Vicious Circles to V

Would seeing nature as alive and cornucopian support behaviour change?
Yes. Our view of nature is a projection of ourselves and therefore also shapes our behaviour. Where
nature and its services are seen as limited, it seems natural to fight over rapidly disappearing resources.
If we project social Darwinist ideas onto nature, there is little to stop us from continuing to grab and
hoard resources and to ignore the plight of less fortunate species, classes, races, regions or religions.
Our industrial system initially created wealth but, in the context of the diminishing natural capital
and space it has caused, there are winners and growing number of losers. Wealth trickles up through
the myriad capillaries of capitalism. Today, many powerful organizations are extracting the natural
‘capital and interest’ from poorer regions of the world.
37
This is not good karma. For example,
chemicals banned in the US have been sold overseas, recycled and returned in the guise of treated
products in a vicious ‘circle of poison’.
38
But if we realize that we can increase the carrying capacity
of nature without creating hardships at either end of the social order, then there is no justification
for the prevalent survivalist or zero sum ideology. If development were re-conceived as potentially
‘net positive’, we might invest in activities that make everyone better off. Designing cities that are
healthy, safe and pleasant for everyone also reduces the need for defensive design and expenditure,
like security guards and gated communities. In the given ‘closed’ intellectual frameworks, defensive
design appears to make sense. In contrast, the belief that we can increase the ecological base and
substantive democracy while living off the interest would turn the spotlight on institutional structures
that systematically transfer land, wealth and resources from the many to the few [Chapter 14].
